Smartphone-powered citizen science for bioacoustic monitoring
نویسنده
چکیده
An initial classifier considers the main frequency component of the call, centered around 13.5 kHz and spanning mainly between 11 and 17 kHz. The ratio between this and a range where little noise is present (8–9 kHz) is a measure of the acoustic energy of the cicada call, as can be defined as: • Only cicada native to the UK • Only present in the New Forest • High pitched call at ~ 13.5 kHz • Difficult to hear for people > 40

Citizen Sensors for SHM: Use of Accelerometer Data from Smartphones
Ubiquitous smartphones have created a significant opportunity to form a low-cost wireless Citizen Sensor network and produce big data for monitoring structural integrity and safety under operational and extreme loads. Such data are particularly useful for rapid assessment of structural damage in a large urban setting after a major event such as an earthquake. This study explores the utilization...

Kinsey Reporter is a global mobile app to share, explore, and visualize anonymous data about sex. Reports are submitted via smartphone, then visualized on a website or downloaded for offline analysis. In this paper we present the major features of the Kinsey Reporter citizen science platform designed to preserve the anonymity of its contributors, and preliminary data analyses that suggest quest...

Marine processes are observed with sensors from both the ground and space over large spatio-temporal scales. Citizen-based contributions can fill observational gaps and increase environmental stewardship amongst the public. For this purpose, tools and methods for citizen science need to (1) complement existing datasets; and (2) be affordable, while appealing to different user and developer grou...
